I recently re-discovered my photo of the “Only Crippled Children’s Brass Band in the World”, which was based in Staffordshire around 1910 – just one of the many institutional, industrial school and orphanage bands. This reminded me of other bands of disabled players, almost exclusively blind people, and I collected together what information I had. To my surprise I also found the current Ohio State Blind School Marching Band. It is difficult enough trying to march and play while sighted – this band is an inspiration.
